Client: Gauteng Road and Transport
Project Type: Extensive Road and Infrastructure Repair, Maintenance, and Improvement
Budget: R 14,093,253.42
Completion Date: 04-2021
Background
Gauteng Road and Transport engaged Cush Developments to undertake a comprehensive road and infrastructure maintenance project across various sites in the Gauteng region. The project included a wide array of tasks such as pavement layer repair, pothole and edge break repair, surface treatment, crack sealing, slope failure repair, subsoil drain installation, and the maintenance of inlet and outlet structures. Additional responsibilities included cleaning and maintaining concrete drains, channels, and prefabricated culverts, as well as managing debris removal, road sign installation and cleaning, guardrail maintenance, road marking, and erosion protection.
The Challenge
This large-scale project involved several significant challenges:
- Diverse Scope of Work: The project required the coordination of multiple tasks, including road repairs, infrastructure maintenance, and environmental management, across various locations.
- Technical Complexity: Addressing pavement repairs, sealing cracks, and installing subsoil drains and prefabricated culverts required specialized skills and precision to ensure long-lasting results.
- Environmental and Safety Considerations: The project needed to maintain high environmental and safety standards, especially in tasks involving erosion protection, gabion installation, and vegetation removal.
- Time and Budget Management: With a budget of over R 14 million, the project demanded careful financial planning and efficient time management to complete all tasks within the set timeframe.
The Solution
Cush Developments approached the project with a meticulous and coordinated strategy:
- Pavement and Surface Repair: The team prioritized repairing pavement layers, potholes, edge breaks, and surface failures to enhance road safety and driving conditions. Surface treatments and crack sealing were applied using high-quality materials to extend the lifespan of the roads.
- Drainage and Erosion Management: Advanced techniques were employed for installing and maintaining subsoil drains, prefabricated culverts, and cleaning existing concrete drains and channels. Erosion protection measures, including gabion installation and guardrail maintenance, were implemented to safeguard infrastructure from environmental damage.
- Road Signage and Marking: Cush Developments ensured the installation, cleaning, and maintenance of road signs, as well as the removal of illegal signs. Road marking and the installation of road studs were carried out to improve traffic safety and compliance.
- Vegetation and Debris Management: The project included grass cutting, the removal of undesirable vegetation, and the collection and disposal of debris and litter. This helped maintain the cleanliness and accessibility of roadways and adjacent areas.
- Efficient Project Management: The entire project was executed within the R 14 million budget, with careful resource allocation and project management ensuring that all tasks were completed on time and to the highest standards.
Results
The project was successfully completed, with all road repairs, infrastructure maintenance, and environmental management tasks carried out efficiently and effectively. The work resulted in improved road safety, better drainage, and enhanced overall infrastructure durability across the Gauteng region.
